PSYCHOLOGY 416: Psychology and Problems of Society (3)
     
Why? This course examines the psychological aspects of current social issues. Students become sensitive to potential preventive measures, as well as strategies of intervention.
Content: Current social issues, such as abuses of people and substances, crime, mental and physical health, etc.
Format: Lecture and student presentations.
Evaluation: Objective and essay exams, presentations, research paper.
Prerequisites: Psychology 111. English 101, English 102 and Communications 111 are recommended.
     

 

PSYCHOLOGY 534: Psychology of Women (3)
     
Why? Explores both societal assumptions and the realities of women's lives. Surveys psychological theories about development, relationships, and gender-related issues and problems. Also looks at how gender bias affects theory, research and practice in psychology.
Content: History and role of psychology of women; theories of female development; biological factors in gender; gender differences in cognition, achievement, and aggression; problems women face (violence, health and mental health); relationships with men and other women.
Format: Lecture/discussion/student presentations.
Evaluation: Examinations that include multiple choice, fill-in, and essay questions; term paper; student presentations; occasional brief writing assignments.
Prerequisites: Psychology 111. English 101-102 and Communication 111 is recommended.
Recommended for: Psychology, Sociology, Business, Health, Women's Studies, others.
