LATIN 223: Intermediate Latin (3)
     
Why: This course fulfills part of the LAS language requirement. Readings in Latin literature increase understanding of Roman culture and society and of Western civilization. The readings serve as well to increase appreciation of Latin literature in particular, and to develop the esthetic sense in general.
Content: The students review past work, complete the study of the necessary grammar and vocabulary, and achieve some self-expression through Latin prose composition. They then study selected excerpts of the best Latin prose and poetry. 
Format: Recitation and discussion, with some Latin prose composition.
Evaluation: Two tests, a midterm and a final examination.
Prerequisites: Two years high school or two semesters college Latin.
Required for: Latin majors or minors, the LAS language requirement in Latin and the field major in Classical Studies (unless Greek is chosen). 
Recommended for: Students of English, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Religion, Ancient, Medieval or Renaissance History.
