GERMAN 341: Germany in the European Context (3)
   
Why? Introduces students to various facets of the kulturpolitisch changes that transpired in Europe in the fall of 1989 with the opening of the Berlin Wall and its aftermath. The issues presented will expose the class to a multiperspectual view of unified Germany and the “New Europe,” including the transatlantic implications of this paradigmatic change.
Content: The course will present the consequences of the demise of the socialist regime in the former German Democratic Republic in the European context. It will be taught from a cultural point of view, with appropriate attention paid to the underlying socio-political facts. Due to its strategic geo-political significance, the German experience will serve as the focal point of the discussion within the framework of the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance.
Format: Lecture/discussion.
Evaluation: Two comprehensive multiple choice exams (midterm and final) based on class discussions and readings. One term paper (10-15 pp.) on a topic selected by student in field of interest.
