The English Placement Test is a three-hour test of proficiency in English. It is composed of a forty-five minute multiple choice test and two fifty-minute narrative, descriptive, or expository essays.
Placement into Composition Classes for Native Speakers of English
English 011
English 011 is open to 1) students who have not taken the English Placement test, 2) students who score 19 and below on ACT-English, and 3)students who do not receive a qualifying score for English 101 on the English Placement Test.
English 101
English 101 is open to 1) students who score 20-26 on ACT-English, or 460 on SAT Verbal; 2) students who achieve a qualifying score on the English Placement Test, and 3) students who have passed the English 011 Exit Exam. Students given credit for English 101 on the basis of ACT, SAT, AP, or CLEP scores are not required to take the Placement Test or the courses. English 102
The prerequisite for entering English 102 is a grade of "C" or better in English 101 or its ESL equivalent, English 100. Students receiving credit for English 101 because of ACT, SAT, AP, or CLEP scores may enroll directly in English 102. Students given credit for English 102 on the basis of an AP score of 5 are not required to take the Placement Test or the course. English 102 is for both native and non-native speakers of English.
Placement into Composition Classes for Non-Native Speakers of English (ESL)
English 013
English 013 is open to 1) non-native speakers of English who have not taken the departmental placement test, and 2) non-native speakers of English who do not receive a qualifying score for English 100 on the English Placement Test or ACT exam.
English 015
English 015 is open to 1) students who must take it because of English Placement Test results ACT scores, or English 013 instructor request, and 2) non-native speakers of English who seek preparation in reading and writing before taking English 100.
English 100
English 100 is open to 1) non-native speakers of English who achieve a qualifying score on the departmental placement test, and 2) students who have passed the English 013 or 015 Exit Exam. TOEFL and EPE do not substitute for the English Placement Test.
English 102
The prerequisite for entering English 102 is a grade of "C" or better in English 101 or "B" or better in its ESL equivalent, English 100.
